Norway kids: Father says mom psychological problems

The father of the two children who were take into protective care by the Norwegian child welfare services has told The Hindu that his wife has a psychological problem, a fact that he held back to get custody of the children.

Anurup Bhattacharya has alleged that his wife had attacked him and he will be separating from her.

Anurup told The Hindu: "This is not the first time this has happened. Sagarika has assaulted me many times before. You can find all those details in the dossier. But this time she created a massive commotion and physically assaulted me.

The noise was so great that the neighbours came and my wife told them I was hitting her! If I concealed the seriousness of Abhigyan's and our family's problems it was because I thought that was the only way we could get our children back. But I now realise that was a mistake and I should have spoken the truth right from the start."

The Hindu also quoted him saying, "It was not just cultural bias that prompted the CWS to act. My wife has a serious psychological problem. She is extremely immature, like a teenager really, and all this media attention has gone to her head. I tried to protect her and do her bidding. But last night was such a shock that I have now moved out and am seeking a legal separation".

On February 28, the Norway's child welfare service said that two children of Indian parents taken into its care will be handed over to their uncle pending a court ruling.

"It has been concluded that care of the two children should be awarded to the brother of the children's father, enabling him to take the children back to India," Norway's thelocal.no website quoted the child welfare service in Stavanger city as saying in a statement.

Three-year-old Abhigyan and one-year-old Aishwarya -- children of Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya, were taken under protective care by Barnevarne (Norwegian child welfare services) in May last year on the ground that they were not being looked after properly by their parents.

Over a month ago, India and Norway struck an agreement under which the parents named Anurup's brother Arunabhash Bhattacharya as the primary caretaker of the two children. Arunabhash Bhattacharya is currently in Norway.
